The chicken slaughter site seen in a viral TikTok video does not hold a Malaysian halal certificate, and neither do the chickens slaughtered there, Jakim said on 21 October. The premises, near Pudu Market in Kuala Lumpur, is registered to a different company and not to Bhuiyen Sdn Bhd, the name that had been linked to it online. (NST)

What happened

The video, which showed a questionable way of slaughtering chickens, spread quickly on social media and prompted Jakim to open a probe. (NST) Jakim then joined the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), the Health Ministry, and the Federal Territories (JAWI) and Selangor (JAIS) Islamic religious departments to gather information and inspect the site.

Their preliminary findings:

Jakim has asked DBKL to confirm the premises' licence status and who operates it. (Berita RTM)

What Jakim and Bhuiyen said

Jakim director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee stressed that the findings are only preliminary, and that any breaches will face enforcement under the law. He described compliance with Islamic slaughter rules as a basic requirement that "must not be taken lightly". Bhuiyen's management denied that the company or any of its branches had anything to do with the slaughter method in the video. (NST)

Putrajaya MP Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin also called for an investigation into where the chickens were supplied and sold, so that both their halal status and their food safety can be checked.

Why it matters

Most diners never see where their chicken comes from, so cases like this hit trust hard. Restaurants and caterers should ask suppliers for a valid Malaysian halal certificate and check it themselves instead of relying on a logo. Diners can look for a valid Jakim certificate displayed at the shop. Jakim says it will work with enforcement agencies to tighten monitoring, so expect more updates as the investigation continues.
