Swiss chocolate maker Lindt & Sprüngli has opened its first retail store in South-East Asia, at The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur. Two more KL shops, at Merdeka 118 and Mid Valley Megamall, are expected within the next month. (The Star)

Where and when

What's inside

The store carries more than 200 Lindt products. Highlights reported by The Star:

Why Malaysia first

Iva Hristova, Lindt & Sprüngli's CEO for emerging markets, told The Star that the brand chose Malaysia for its multicultural market and for its local partner, retail group Valiram. She called Malaysia the company's "door-opener" to the region. Lindt plans to expand carefully over the next two years, with Singapore next and then Indonesia and Thailand. Hristova also said Malaysia-specific flavours will arrive within the coming year.

Why it matters

It is a vote of confidence in KL as a launchpad for the region. For local chocolate lovers, the bigger draw is the store-exclusive Lindor flavours and the Malaysia-specific range promised for next year.

If you are checking halal status before you buy, look for the certification on each product or ask in store, since The Star's report does not cover it.
