For a proper Kelantan breakfast in Kota Bharu, order nasi kerabu at Lieniey Nasi Kerabu Tumis, nasi dagang at Kedai Kopi White House and, later in the day, laksam at Restoran By-T Laksam Special. Most plates cost about RM5 to RM20, and the morning is when this city eats best.
Nasi kerabu: the herb rice
Nasi kerabu is rice piled with fresh herbs, toasted coconut and sambal, and the blue version is the one that gets photographed. Grilled lamb or chicken and solok lada (stuffed chilli) are common partners.
Lieniey Nasi Kerabu Tumis
Lieniey Nasi Kerabu Tumis on Jalan Abdul Kadir Adabi is the name every Kelantan food list keeps returning to. Choose the tumis-style white rice or blue golok rice, then add smoky kambing bakar. Open daily from 6.30am to 2pm, although some listings say it closes on Wednesdays. RM10 to RM20.
Nasi Kerabu Panji
Nasi Kerabu Panji is a no-frills breakfast spot just outside town where the rice comes properly blue under a mound of raw herbs. Go early. Daily from 6am to 1.30pm, RM8 to RM15.
Restoran Nasi Ulam Cikgu
Restoran Nasi Ulam Cikgu at Kampung Kraftangan suits a later start, opening daily from 10.30am to 5pm. Expect piles of ulam, budu, kampung chicken and golden omelette. RM12 to RM25.
Nasi dagang: the breakfast of the east coast
In Kelantan, nasi dagang comes with a rich gulai, and it is sold from early morning until it runs out.
Kedai Kopi White House
Kedai Kopi White House on Jalan Sultanah Zainab is an old-school kopitiam where nasi dagang and nasi tumpang sit beside kaya toast, half-boiled eggs and Hainanese coffee. Hours run long, from 6.30am to 1am, and it closes on Fridays. RM6 to RM15.
Restoran Capital
Restoran Capital is the downtown kopitiam known for Kelantan-style nasi dagang and blue nasi kerabu. Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 1pm, closed on Mondays. RM6 to RM12. It is listed as non-halal in our data.
Laksam: the rolled noodle
Laksam is fat, steamed rice-noodle rolls in a thick, slightly sweet fish and coconut milk gravy. It is one of the region's most comforting dishes.
Restoran By-T Laksam Special
Restoran By-T Laksam Special in Kampung Panji is Kota Bharu's go-to laksam house, and the special adds quail eggs and serunding. It opens from the afternoon into the evening, so check Google Maps for today's hours. RM5 to RM10.
Maheran Laksa
Maheran Laksa is a long-time favourite stall at Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah, and eating upstairs at the market is a Kota Bharu rite of passage. It keeps market hours, in the morning. Details were last checked some time ago, so confirm before you go. RM4 to RM8.
How to plan it
- Start early. Breakfast rice can sell out, so aim to be out by 8am.
- Do the market mid-morning. Pasar Siti Khadijah is lively, and upstairs is where you sit down to eat.
- Check Fridays. Kelantan's weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, so confirm hours before making the trip.
Halal note
Except for Restoran Capital, these shops are listed as Muslim-friendly in our guide, which means they are Muslim-owned or reported as halal, but certification is not confirmed. Look for a valid JAKIM certificate if this matters to you.
