Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Monday 9 November a replacement holiday in most states. For a classic festive meal, go for banana leaf at Sri Nirwana Maju or Kanna Curry House in the Klang Valley, Veloo Vilas in Penang or Anderson Curry House in Ipoh. Buy your murukku on Jalan Scott in Brickfields or Jalan Tengku Kelana in Klang. If you'd rather let a hotel do the cooking, Le Méridien Putrajaya serves the longest-running Deepavali buffet we found, daily from 1 to 15 November. Our full Deepavali 2026 guide lists 35 places across Malaysia, region by region.
Banana leaf, the festive staple
The big Klang Valley names get very busy over the long weekend. Sri Nirwana Maju on Jalan Telawi is the one most families know. Kanna Curry House in PJ is the place for crab and salted fish curry. In Brickfields, Vishal Food & Catering sits right in the middle of the bazaar, and in Klang, Yap Kee Banana Leaf has fed the town for decades.
Up north, Veloo Vilas and Sri Ananda Bahwan on Lebuh Penang put you in the middle of George Town's Little India. Ipoh's Anderson Curry House cooks like a home kitchen. It closes on Mondays, and this year that includes the 9 November holiday.
Many family-run shops close or cut their hours on Deepavali day itself, so check their latest posts before you drive over.
Vegetarian feasts
Many families eat vegetarian on Deepavali morning. Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant in Penang serves a meat-free thali and banana leaf meals. In KL, Annalakshmi at the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields runs a pay-as-you-wish vegetarian buffet, and The Ganga Cafe in Bangsar cooks South Indian food with a Gujarati touch. Both are in the full guide.
Murukku and sweets
In Brickfields, Jalan Scott has Srinivasa Sweets for murukku and mixture, and Patiala Punjabi Sweets for palkova and jalebi. In Klang's Little India, A2B on Jalan Tengku Kelana sells boxed sweets next to vegetarian meals. In Perak, the snack stalls of Kampung Kacang Puteh in Buntong get packed in the final week (Ipoh Echo). Go early, because the popular trays sell out before the weekend.

A note on halal
Most banana leaf restaurants and Indian sweet shops are pork-free, but they are not halal-certified. Most hotel listings don't state a halal status either. If it matters to you, ask to see a valid JAKIM certificate or look up the outlet on MyeHALAL before you book.
Happy Deepavali! See the full guide for addresses, hours and every pick.
